In a few weeks, my daughter will be entering her final year in elementary school. The bossy-by-nature, first-born that she is, she’s been excited lately to return to school and be one of the “big” kids–but I must admit when she asks me to get all excited with her, it’s hard for me to not mark this occasion with a little bit of apprehension, as next year, she’ll be leaving the safe nest of elementary and released into the big, bad world of middle school and beyond, where who-knows-what will await her. Certainly my friends with kids older than mine make me scared of the years beyond elementary and how much sooner innocence is shattered.

Jenna is one of the young women I’ve been lucky enough to photograph this year who restores my faith that not all girls in high school are Snookie wannabes. She’s a bright, athletic, beautiful girl with a really good heart. She’s the kind of girl that I’d be proud to call my own–and during our session, I could just see how proud her mom was of her, and how confident she is that she did a great job raising her and knowing that when Jenna leaves a much bigger nest than elementary school next year, she’ll be confidently going to college with a good head and a kind heart.

All my best to you during your senior year, Jenna!

Up to recently, my business hasn’t centered around working with a ton of teens, so Meghan and Amanda, BFFs since “in utero,” were a nice change of pace from chasing toddlers around a park (as much as I love chasing toddlers around a park :).  Meghan, the blonde, is my niece (well, technically my husband’s cousin’s daughter–but I consider her my niece), and I’ve known her since, well, I could chase her as a toddler around a park. She served as the cutest flower girl ever during my wedding, and I had to pause yesterday during the session and catch my breath: It’s so amazing to see her on the verge of adulthood and the promise of the rest of her life. She’s an amazing athlete, a straight-A student, and as beautiful as she is on the outside, she is even more so on the inside. It will be so bittersweet to see her graduate this year, knowing it means fewer family times we’ll see her, and all the obligations and travel and hectic schedules that I’m sure college will bring her. Her senior year, I’m sure, will be one to treasure for those reasons.
