When I was first contacted by Rose’s mom to photograph her new baby when she arrived, she mentioned that the baby girl they were expecting was going to be named Rose. And thus, a quest to find a perfect prop began. When I found this blanket, it seemed a perfect fit…

And her parents also brought along an equally-as-fitting headband…

And Rose, well, as you have already seen, she brought along some amazing cuteness…

When I was a kid, there was a fair amount of cheek squishing that came from older ladies we’d run into when at the mall, or the grocery store, or wherever we’d run into a sweet older woman eager to share a compliment. My great-grandmother was such a voracious cheek squisher (and kisser) that I have to admit that she scared me a bit–as I entered middle childhood, hellos were said hastily and quickly as I tried to duck out of the reach of her fingers. As you can imagine, my young self swore I’d never, ever become a cheek squisher or kisser when I became an “old” woman.

And here I am, not close to being “old” (well, according to me, anyway!) and Brandon, well, he got me… It took every single ounce of me to resist giving those sweet, adorable cheeks a kiss and a squish.

It’s terrible being as far behind in blogging as I am right now–I’m hoping to catch up over the next few days with some recent sessions and new arrivals!

First up is Anna, who traveled to me all the way from middle of Delaware–even staying a night in a hotel so that they could be to their session early (which was a huge, huge honor!) When her mom was nearing the end of her pregnancy, she was diagnosed with an IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction–essentially, a baby who is not growing as big as she should be for her gestational age for either a known or unknown reason) and Anna was delivered a few weeks early so she could begin eating and packing on weight on the outside. She spent a few weeks in the NICU, but arrived healthy and beautiful to our session a few weeks ago. Apparently, whatever was causing her IUGR certainly had absolutely no effect on her hair and eyelashes–can you get over how long and beautiful they both are!

Certainly, a baby who’s loved by both her parents and her adoring big sister. Congratulations guys! And many thanks for coming all the way to see me to take Anna’s first portraits–it was truly an honor!

Even though I’m a first born, as a mom, I’ve always been a little more sympathetic to second (and subsequent) borns as, in my experience, it seems many times they’re born with a little less fanfare and celebration. And as a photographer, I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve heard families lament the fact that they had their second (or third or fourth or fifth) child photographed much fewer times than their first–especially as their kids grow older and start to question why their siblings have so many more pictures than they do.

So I must admit that I love getting the call to photograph a second (or third or fourth or fifth…) baby, and certainly appreciate that, in the absence of a baby shower and a full wardrobe of new baby clothing and gear, parents do something special to celebrate and mark the occasion of a new baby’s arrival into their family. After all, you can see that no matter whether the first or the second (or the third or the fourth or the fifth…) born, new babies are celebrated, welcomed and loved just as equally.

Parents snuggled with their babies is always a favorite part of the session for me: For each of my kids, when they were new babies, I paused and tried to remember how we were like puzzle pieces: a perfect fit of their bums fitting into the palm of my hand, their bodies into the bend of my arm and their little heads into the crook of my neck. It took only a few weeks for their bodies to grow where those “pieces” didn’t fit together nearly the same as they did when they were first born, and months and years later, I longed for a little visual reminder of just how snuggly my new babies were, and how we were a perfect fit.

Cloned?

I kid, of course, but I’m not sure that I’ve ever photographed a baby that looked so much like one parent over the other. Lucky girl to get those beautiful genes, wouldn’t you say? :)

And can you believe that this Anderson, like the Anderson I worked with 2 weeks ago, was also a smiler! I think this is the biggest baby grin I’ve ever captured on film. Apparently, there must be something with the name that makes babies happy. :)

I know I’ve admitted before that I was a baby name book junkie during my pregnancies. Quite possibly, I may be the only person in the world who owned ~~five~~ (ok, eight) volumes of baby name books when one good one would have definitely sufficed (especially because our kids certainly didn’t wind up with odd or unusual names–unless you want to count the fact that I named my daughter with a more boyish name…)

The books have been packed up and are ready to head to a new home, but before I gave them away, I was interested to see what Hannah, the baby I just recently worked with, meant. She was so sweet and quiet throughout our session (except when being changed, I discovered!), I was not so surprised to learn that her name means “grace.”

Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful daughter with me, Michael & Jillian! Congratulations!

*tap tap* Anyone still out there? You are? Whew!

I know. I’ve been such a bad blogger the past few months during busy season and the holidays. But new years are about fresh starts–and new babies! And I’ve got loads of new babies to share in the upcoming weeks. Jackson was one of them.

Jackson’s mom and dad met with me in the fall for a maternity session that was such a great time–I instantly loved working with them and couldn’t wait to meet their new little guy. Jackson arrived a week early, and they brought him in to be photographed over the weekend when he was a mere 6 days old (and was an absolute dream to photograph–never once made a peep!)

Mom is a dermatologist, and when I had a chance to really look through the images from the session, I thought it was so special and meaningful that we got so many skin-to-skin shots of them with their new baby.

Isn’t he adorable?
